Over 20 Years Experience

Canine Behavioral Services Inc. was established in 1996 by Canine Behavior Consultant and Certified Pet Dog Trainer, Brian Manning, CPDT-KA. Sometimes referred to as Rhode Island’s "Dog Whisperer", Brian has been improving the lives of dogs and their human counterparts for over 20 years by educating owners how to effectively communicate with and provide for the needs of their four-legged best friends.

The 3 C’s - By becoming our dog's Calm, Confident & Consistent "Packleader" we can alleviate and avoid many bad behaviors and channel excessive energy into a positive and productive relationship.

The actual numbers of dogs euthanized yearly in the United States is staggering. According to statistical information provided by the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), in 1997 there were approximately 74.8 million owned dogs in the United States. Studies show that over 5 million dogs are surrendered to animal shelters or humane organizations every year. Of that 5,000,000 unwanted dogs, approximately 64% are euthanized. That means that over 3,200,000 (Three million two hundred thousand) dogs are euthanized in this country every year. An estimated 24% of these dogs were euthanized because the owner could no longer handle their pets’ problem behavior.

I believe that percentage to be much, much higher.

My name is Brian Manning and I am the Lead Trainer and owner of Canine Behavioral Services Inc. Almost 20 years ago I had the unfortunate task of "disposing" of some of these so called "problem" dogs. For years, I worked at the Animal Rescue League of Boston and one of my many shelter duties was that of Euthanasia Technician. To accomplish my "duties" I was forced to become hardened to this epidemic but all the while knowing that my goal in life was to somehow make a difference in these seemingly absurd numbers of unwanted pets. So, I began immersing myself in study, attending seminars & lectures, reading behavioral journals and honing my techniques on my own "pack" of rescued dogs.

After years of obedience training dogs for clients I began to see clearly that Obedience Training does not fix Behavior Problems. Just because the dog had learned how to sit, this did not mean that they were behaviorally balanced.

While continuing my education, the focus of my study began to change from obedience training dogs for people to "People Training" for dogs. It has become my sole mission to educate dog owners how to properly identify and provide for the needs of their furry loved ones. Once a true Leader – Follower dynamic is established and the human becomes their dog's true Packleader, they are both on their way to a harmonious relationship built on trust and respect, that will last a lifetime.
